Cannabinol (CBD) is 1 of more than a 100 naturally occurring phytochemical compounds found in the genus cannabis plant.CBD originates from the genus cannabis hemp plant it is sold in forms of hemp flowers, extracted oils and many other products that are all available on today’s current market.
Unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychoactive properties that produce any kind of narcotic high. Recent clinical studies have suggested that CBD has potential medical benefits.
Although more research is yet to be to conducted in this area, the UN has recently taken cannabis off of the dangerous narcotics list which allows for me research to be studied on cannabis as a whole.
A recent European review looking at medicinal cannabis, did apparently show conclusive evidence of a therapeutic benefit in certain conditions, i.e. chronic pain, nausea and vomiting after certain cancer treatments, and muscle spasticity in multiple sclerosis.
How do i know CBD safe?
According to the World Health Organization CBD is generally tolerated by most humans. It has a good safety profile and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has even approved an oral CBD product, Epidiolex, as a treatment for Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes – two severe childhood-onset seizure disorders.
We naturally produce cannabinoids in our endocannabinoid system – one affecting multiple bodily processes such as mood, appetite, pain, and varying cognitive functions. One of the most beneficial endocannabinoids is anandamide (the bliss molecule).
Anandamide is important because it activates our CB1 receptors. These receptors help to:
Benefits for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
While anandamide works to activate our CB1 receptors our bodies release an enzyme called FAAH that break down anandamide. The reason CBD is beneficial is that it inhibits FAAH’s ability to do its job.
CBD also activates PPAR-gamma receptors PPAR-gamma receptors play a role in lipid uptake, insulin sensitivity, dopamine release and the degradation of beta-amyloid plaque which can positively affect diseases such as diabetes, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s.
